Along with the break-up of the internet, I've also found I need a consistent routine. So as to avoid going stir crazy I take my morning walk first. I then get dressed (because I was naked the first time) and leave the house. Where I spend most of my days lately is the public library, where I have encountered the "quiet room." For this reason it is the BEST library ever, more pleasing than any university or college library I have ever visited. As you know most libraries are no longer truly quiet spaces. Here in the safety of the last existing library quiet room on earth are other writers typing, reading or daydreaming away. The energy in the room is palpable and I am motivated to produce.
The best part of the day is lunch, when I get to check out books for evening reading. Lately it has consisted of some classics, lots of cookbooks and Ayurveda, as well as the occasional disappointing bestseller (more on that in a future post). I think that anyone who writes, and especially those of us who have other full-time pursuits, goes through serious ups and downs in their level of commitment and ability to persevere. I know I constantly struggle with finding the balance between life and work because I take a lot of work home with me. When you're a teacher its difficult not to, and if you love what you do then its not necessarily something you want to always shut off.
This brings me to my last bit of advice for writers. In giving up the internet I have found spare hours to enjoy the outdoors and not let summer pass me by just because I have to write most of the week. Even though some writers will tell you that you MUST write every single day, I fudge on weekends. D. and I reserve these days for exploring new places and treasured old ones... time to revel in the "pathless woods"
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.
How beautiful. Your photos are making me envious of Summertime. Unless a natural disaster or global economy crash should occur, it looks likely that we're visiting your country next year Andrea! Both S and i want to go to California...so that is probably a definite - but we'd also like to see Texas, Louisiana and Florida. What is the distance like in travel time on a plane between Florida and Southern Cali? Hope to meet you!
ReplyDeletewhat incredibly beautiful places you two go ramble in! that green blue water looks like a hidden cenote i swam in in mexico. so enchanted. good luck with your writing; sounds like you have a great routine going and i actually envy the practice and devotion to writing. i need to motivate myself to do some more serious writing. i appreciate your tips and thoughts immensely! and in between the cerebral journeys, of course, happy wild and pathless summer to you!
ReplyDeleteoh Teeny, how exciting!!!! I don't blame you, I am looking forward to an adventure to California myself. I believe (?) CA to FL is something like 4-5 hours. If you do plan a trip I'd be happy to offer up any travel bits I might have and of course I'd be more than thrilled if your travels brought you our way :) We'd have lots of fun showing you around. What time of year are you thinking?
ReplyDeleteHeather-- you are too kind! I think you do a great job on the blog offering up beautiful prose to your many readers daily :) I'd say that's a pretty swell writing routine, wouldn't you? ha ha!
I like hearing about all your treasures.
ReplyDeleteHappy writing!
i just died and went to heaven! what gorgeous pictures!
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea, we're planning on May/June nxt year. And my librarian is telling me we HAVE to go to Florida, so we're trying to factor it all in. Wow, 4-5 hours is longer than it takes us to get to Australia. I sound like a yokel, but i do rather enjoy being a small city country bumpkin.
ReplyDeleteHi hon, and thank you for this beautiful and insightful post. Gosh you're right about the internets. I feel like I definitely need some time off it and my time in to be more structured.
ReplyDeleteYou and your honey look lovely in these shots. I quite envy your skintone my dear, you have a very healthy glow ;)
And most importantly!!! Big blogger meet-up in cali 10 months from now!??!?!?!? My heart goes a flutter with the possibilities!
You are beautiful on the beach in your white dress Andrea! That swimming hole looks absolutely magical. So glad to hear that you've been having a summer that's both productive and FUN. I've been taking some time away from the internets too lately and am now trying to find a balanced way back to it all, it's tough!
ReplyDeleteHere's to continued productive days in the "quiet room" and weekends filled with summertime adventures! And yes, a future trip to cali too!
I think I understand exactly how you feel. My job requires spending more than 10 hours a day surfing the net and sometimes this is really frustrating for me as it leaves me absolutely no time and state of mind when I get home to do some writing. I end up writing everything on my blog, which is good but on the other hand I would write some things on paper...You just encourage me to see things differently! :)
ReplyDeleteHi, I found your blog through the lovely Girl who married a bear. It s such a true thing that at times we need to break away from this connection, Funnily enough I have just written a blog on how much I love to blog and How much I love this time, but in saying that I need good hearty breaks and time with the hills and seas when I get a chance to recharge, As wonderful as this creative and most wonderful virtual communities are, we need our freshest of airs and bright sunny days, it is Summer after all. I opened your blog and was immediatley delighted by reading your About me section, I would quite happily love all the same things. I am glad to have found this. x E
