Lately he's been reading from The Fruit Hunters at night before we go to bed, which has left me having all sorts of weird dreams about the possibilities inherent in tasting such wonders as cloudberries, miracle fruits , mangosteens, and odoriferous durians .
The arctic Cloudberry, found only in cold climates it is said to taste like fresh tart apples and yogurt.
Miracle Fruit, which is said to make bitter & sour foods taste sweet for up to an hour after you eat one.
The lovely fleshy white quartered segments of a Mangosteen are said to resemble a combination between citrus & peach.
The stinky Durian, reactions to its odor range from heavenly to disgusting! It's banned from many hotels & public transport systems in Asia due to its odor. It's a very fatty fruit that is described as tasting somewhere between almond ice cream & custard.
Needless to say we're pretty excited about our new location in which we can experiment with some tropical fruits. Have any of you ever had these? I'd love to hear more about them. Until then I'll wish everyone far-out weird Cloudberry dreams!

Oh what a lovely book by the sounds of it. Having tasted the arctic cloud berry, I'll tell you that it's more sour than sweet, almost tangy, but it does taste a bit like apples. I miss having lingon berries and cloud berries for sure.
ReplyDeleteThe Fruit Hunters was a great book. It woke in me an obsession for bizarre fruit & food as well. Have you ever tried guineps? Whenever I visit Puerto Rico, I gorge myself on them.
ReplyDeleteAbout 2 years ago, I was introduced to the miracle fruit, and became obsessed with it. So much so, that I started a blog, and have even started selling tablets on my site. Here's to new discoveries of heavenly flavors and interesting stories. Thanks for the post. Now I don't think I'll rest until I try a cloudberry.
The durian looks like Jackfruit...which i believe is supposed to smell pretty bad. Anyway, you've described it so prettily that I'm only thinking of custard and cream now. Happy adventuring to you!

So awesome! There are many a strange fruit here in Hawaii, but my favorite are the apple bananas. They are smallish bananas and they taste like...you guessed it...a combination of bananas and apples.
ReplyDeleteI've also grown to love the breadfruit (which looks a bit similar to the durian). It's more a starch (like potatoes) than a fruit, but very nice when baked and buttered.
Andrea! Just the other day I tried my very first mangosteen. It is the most delicious thing I have tasted--creamy and sweet and luscious!
ReplyDeleteMiracle fruit was one of my favorite things in Costa Rica. Ben and I tried to take some from the Caribbean side, where we had been living, to the mountains across the country, to visit a friend, where we hoped we could treat him to a flavor sensation! Unfortunately, the berries lost their zip in transit.
And the durian is the most disgusting thing I have ever smelled, though it's very popular here in Singapore. In all the markets and stands, and there are tons of specialty/delicacy restaurants that make a variety of durian treats. Not for me. Ben tasted just tiny bit and nearly vomited. I was certain I had not the strength to try it after just one sniff...
Breadfruit on the other hand, now that is a delight!

Gina

ReplyDeleteI meant to send that to you in a lovely little email reply to an automatically generated blogger email i received notifying me that you had made a comment on my blog...but email doesn't work that way. Sorry I sent those love letters into outer space.

Gina
I have never heard of any of these? How will they affect the local environment?
